Overview

Job Title: Support Worker/Personal Care Assistant Location: Ferring Hourly rate: £10.00 Reference: BRR5151 Hours/shifts: 9 hours per week, afternoons preferable, flexibility needed. Summary • 22 year old man with autism requires support to enable him to live independently. • He lives with his family and pets in Ferring but the plan is to support him to develop skills and confidence to live independently in future. • He also has epilepsy and is at risk of having seizures. • He is able to express his views and wishes clearly but has difficulty with understanding social cues and can interpret what people say very literally. • He likes to chat and enjoys tv programmes such as The Young Ones and the Big Bang Theory. • His interests include military history, playing on his x-box, space and the environment. • He requires support and encouragement with carrying out personal care and domestic tasks including maintaining a habitable home and meal preparation. • You would also be required to assist with accessing leisure and social facilities, using public transport, developing and maintaining friendships, keeping safe and developing coping strategies in emergencies. • Playing computer games at home, chatting, keeping him company. • Experience of working with people with autism and an understanding of managing epilepsy required. • You must be friendly, confident, assertive and have the ability to motivate and reassure/calm the young man if he becomes agitated. • Own car would be useful but not essential. Description Typical duties Domestic - support/encouragement with Keeping his own room tidy and clean, bed making etc. Meal preparation - teaching basic cooking skills, kitchen safety. Cleaning/tidying up after using kitchen and bathroom, including washing up cooking utensils and dishes. Personal Care: support/encouragement/prompting with • Washing/bathing/showering • General hair/skin care/shaving/grooming • Dressing appropriately for the weather or activity Social: support/assistance with • Keeping himself safe when out in the community • Accessing social clubs, voluntary work • Developing friendships and engaging with his peers Person specification The successful applicant will be: • Have experience of autism and epilepsy • Able to motivate and encourage • Respectful of the client’s privacy and confidentiality • Reliable with good time-keeping • Able to both follow instructions and work on own initiative • Hygienic, tidy minded and well organised • Fit and healthy to undertake the required duties • Patient and understanding • Honest and cheerful • Able to speak and read English to a reasonable standard • Legally permitted to work in the United Kingdom • Able to work at all times to high standards of Health & Safety Please note, if you are successful in your application for this role you will be employed directly through the individual employer and not Independent Lives.
