Occupational Therapist Battersea, London £35,000 - £39,000 per annum dependent on experience. 37.5 hours a week. Summary of the role: Outstanding opportunity to join a fantastic Hospital that has a 22-bed low secure hospital for men suffering from major mental illness and a history of offending behaviour. The ethos of the service has always been to promote recovery and provide the highest quality care. The successful candidate will involve delivery of OT provision, focusing on functional daily living skills and specific mental health and risk issues. This will include the assessment, treatment and evaluation of clinical interventions, planning and running a range of therapeutic individual and group work, carrying out functional assessments and contributing to multidisciplinary team care planning and risk assessment. The patients are people with diverse needs and presentations, often with psychotic symptoms, cognitive impairment, secondary diagnosis of personality disorder and can exhibit aggressive behaviour and poor insight. You will work closely with the Multi-Disciplinary Team as well as with Activity Coordinators to provide a quality service, which is responsive to clients’ needs. Responsibilities of the position: Responsible for the Occupational Therapy assessment, treatment and evaluation of the allocated clinical caseload (up to 22 patients), and in compliance with the care programme approach. To undertake the MOHOST and other assessments as directed by service OT pathway. To ensure daily feedback is received from nursing staff before starting work on designated war To motivate clients to attend and participate in Occupational Therapy treatment sessions. To maintain a flexible approach to sessions, modifying activities according to the fluctuating clinical presentation of individual clients and the needs of the service. To work in collaboration with other members of the multidisciplinary team to provide a coordinated care package. To attend ward rounds / case conferences and report on patients’ progress in Occupational Therapy. To actively contribute to the multidisciplinary team’s risk assessment process and obtain agreement from the team before engaging clients in any activity that may require therapeutic risk taking. To assess individual patients, establish aims and objectives, and plan their Occupational Therapy treatment programme in consultation with other members of the multi-disciplinary team. To organise and run group activities as part of the occupational therapy programme and the units / wards. To co-facilitate groups with members of the multi-disciplinary team when appropriate. To carry out home visits when appropriate. To regularly communicate information to other members of the Occupational Therapy Service about individual patients’ treatment, management and discharge plans. To maintain adequate clinical records and to write specific occupational therapy reports as necessary. Managerial & Departmental Responsibilities: To coordinate the ward-based therapy programme. To actively participate and coordinate in reviews of the timetable, advising about clinical needs of the clients. To encourage good staff communication and participation in staff meetings, teaching sessions and multi-disciplinary meetings and take turns in presenting. To implement the operational policy and other relevant procedures and protocols. To participate in audit as required within the service. To record and maintain stock levels in the designated activity areas in the department. To be responsible for the maintenance of equipment used, to report malfunction of damage to equipment to recommend any need for new items. Be responsible for following BBH procedure on petty cash and OT budget. To assist in staff induction for new team members. Educational Responsibilities: To attend regular managerial supervision sessions with Head of Therapies as well as external clinical supervision with a senior OT. To attend mandatory training courses and re-freshers as required. To attend relevant courses / study days outside the Service and to share information and acquired skills learned with the OT staff / multi-disciplinary team. To work with sessional teachers in the unit providing support and advice as appropriate. To assist Occupational Therapy support staff to identify their own training needs. Professional Responsibilities: To pursue own continuous professional development and to record this through a CPD portfolio. To participate in in-service and external training, in keeping with personal development plan to develop relevant skills and knowledge. To be a reflective practitioner, evaluating the effectiveness of own work and learning from experience, including proactive use of supervision and appraisal process. To regularly update own clinical knowledge through training, clinical discussion and literature review To enhance own understanding of the evidence base for OT interventions. To work in accordance with professional guidelines issued by the College of Occupational Therapy, which are relevant to the field of Forensic Psychiatry. To promote a positive and professional identity for Occupational Therapy within the field of Forensic Psychiatry. To be aware of limitations of own clinical knowledge and seek advice as necessary. To maintain State Registration with Health Professions Council.
